Short Sleeves Insights - Here's To The End!

by Hal Manogue

"The world as we know it is coming to an end. The world as the center of the universe, the world divided from the heavens, the world bound by horizons in which love is reserved for the members of the in group: that is the world that is passing away. The Apocalypse does not point to a fiery Armageddon but to the fact that our ignorance and our complacency are coming to an end." Joseph Campbell was born in White Plains New York in 1904. His life was dedicated to learning and teaching. He was a professor at Sarah Lawrence College for 38 years. He studied Native American history, Medieval literature earning a M.A. in 1927, and went on to become a expert in mythology. George Lucas was influenced by his work and he was a resource for Lucas while Star Wars was being produced. He wrote several books, and was interviewed by Bill Moyers on a PBS special. He certainly understood how we are moving through time, based on what he had studied about the past.
Joseph said the world as we know it is coming to an end. I certainly can relate to that. I think we all can. If nothing else, computers are reshaping our worldwide view, and if they continue developing at the current rate, by 2020 a personal computer will have more power and speed than all the computers in Silicon Valley in 1998. And that is just the tip of the change. The information revolution is outpacing the industrial and agricultural revolutions, which means that human evolution is moving even faster.
But moving where? Space, sea exploration? Perhaps, but my inner revolution represents the direction of ephemeral thinking, the trend toward doing more with less. It takes less matter and energy to modify computer software, that it does the engine of automobiles, but it takes even less to change my mind. All signs are pointing to the new discovery, the world within myself. My attitudes, mental habits, and assumptions as far as who I am, and what I can achieve are my new world. The change I experience happens faster than I realize, once I understand my thoughts create the world I live in. Living in my world, does leave the old one behind, just like realizing the physical world is round instead of flat.
As Campbell said my ignorance and complacency are coming to an end, just by changing my thoughts. No fires or destruction, only new thoughts about connection and awareness. New visions of life and the excitement of creation. A new attitude brings unity and love for all life into my world. It only takes a thought to make it so. I am what I think, and so does the rest of the world.
