Productive Risks - Enjoy Life!

by Nelson Jenstad

Many of us who have been working and living for many years, run the risk of falling into hypnotic routines. Often times I have made the observation that a big comfy reclining chair in your den is one of the most dangerous things mankind has ever invented. The safety and repetition of our routines in life, are very much like that big comfy chair. It’s normal to feel tired after day at work, and often we do deny ourselves many small luxuries and comforts and then come home feeling like you just want to collapse.
At college age, did you ever dream of traveling around the world seeing foreign cities and places? Exploring and learning things you may have never guessed existed in the world? Yes, you do see a little slice of the world from that big easy chair in front of the TV, but you’re not seeing something that somebody else has already taken a production crew and trampled all over it. You need your own experiences!
Our routines can become hypnotic.
The reason that our routines are such a profound danger in our lives and existences is that we only have so much time to live, and by not getting out and doing something different occasionally, we are cheating ourselves out of much of our own brilliant capacity to enjoy life and the big wide world.
True, it’s not easy to get someone to try something they may not be sure if they’ll like, but perhaps they (or you) are making too big of a deal out of it. Take a productive risk!
I remember the first time I took my son to the pottery shop. It turned out to be fun. I had really no idea, but merely a hunch it would at least be interesting. We each picked out some unfinished pieces to paint with the glaze. I picked a spoon holder, and my son picked a small bean bowl. We sat and creatively painted for a good hour or two. The friendly person behind the counter said it would be ready for us to pick up next week. Now, this was a few years ago and we still have the pieces that we made. And they are special, at least, to us.
There are things you can do right nearby which may be a new experience for you. There are also big things like planning vacations in distant lands, or taking a car trip on the road to some city that’s a few hours away. There are actually a surprising number of adventures you can have without disrupting your basic life. What adventures have you taken recently?
I wish you some fascinating times, and don’t forget your camera.
