Procrastination, as most people know is the habit of continually putting things off and deferring them to do at another time. Many believe it's a simple habit and that those that procrastinate simply do not want to do whatever it is they are putting off.
However, being in the habit of procrastination is much deeper than that. There are a variety of issues that spur the habit into being and enhance it. Some are as simple as the person doesn't feel the task is relevant enough to them to warrant their attention, yet others venture into deeper areas that are more affecting than others.
One of the major things behind the habit of procrastination is that a person may have a habit of being a perfectionist. Oddly, you would think that as a perfectionist the person would get everything done on time and perhaps ahead of time.
Unfortunately, the opposite is often true. The perfectionist gets so caught up in being perfect that they wind up halting themselves before they even get the chance to get started. They either want their plan to be initially perfect, or they want the conditions surrounding the plan to be perfect. Since, in most situations, nothing can be absolutely perfect this causes them to get stuck in the habit of procrastination.
Another way that perfectionism acts as an underlying cause behind procrastination is that if the perfectionist gets started on a project or large task, they come to a stumbling block when a situation doesn't fit the plan or idea they have outlined or perfected for themselves. Perfectionism doesn't allow them any room to adapt and they halt their progress as they wait for these conditions to become perfect.
In some scenarios, these stumbling blocks even put a complete halt to the plan or goal. In this way procrastination has not only slowed down their progress, but also made the achievement of one's desires even harder to attain.
At first, this habit is something that starts out as an occasional development. However, as time goes on and the more times a person procrastinates it ingrains itself as a part of this person's life. It's at this point that procrastination goes from something that is mildly annoying to a chronic habit that has many negative effects on life itself.
Perfectionism is but one of the many underlying causes behind procrastination and is often connected with others that make the habit of procrastination extremely difficult to overcome. Fortunately, if a person is determined and enacts a solid plan, they can overcome the habit of procrastination and improve their life substantially.
